Thursdays 6:30 pm at Battle Creek!
We have some East Metro interest in getting a Silver Skiers group going again for this season. With support from Steve Diederichs (Willow River) and Mark Trumper (William O'Brien) I, Deb Diggins, am organizing/coaching a group for Thursday evenings at Battle Creek Recreation Center (Winthrop St. and Lower Afton Rd., St. Paul - near 3M).
We will have an organizational meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday December 13 at the Battle Creek Center. Plan to meet inside to discuss our goals - and our group name - for about 15 to 20 minutes and then ski!
We would like to meet every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:00, this week through Feb. or later if the snow holds. We will not meet on December 27. The center is open (heat and bathrooms) and the trails are lighted.
Silver Skiers is primarily targeted at experienced skiers at or beyond level 5 who are interested in improving their endurance and learning some race level skills. Race participation will be supported but not required. Our main goal, as always, is to have fun! Generally the ages for this group are 10-14 years old. Skiers must belong to one of the regular MYSL clubs in order to participate in Silver Skiers.
We will be using both skate and classic technique so please plan to have equipment for either technique. Combi boots and combi skis are OK but two pairs of poles really a necessity so you have the right length for each technique. Two cheap pairs of poles are a much better option than one fancier pair that's the wrong length. (Given that kids grow in big spurts, we know this won't always work out perfectly...)
Let's start with classic skiing this week and try to alternate techniques each week.
Please register online as a regular club skier through your home club by Thursday if possible. There will be paper registration for Silver Skiers on Thursday night. There is a $15 fee beyond your regular club dues
