Wild River Youth Nordic Ski Club

Welcome to the MYSL at Wild River State Park!

The Wild River Youth Nordic Ski Club brings the joy of cross-country skiing to youth in the North Branch area. 2010 will be our fourth year in the MYSL. The MYSL provides a structured 8 week curriculum at six different ski levels.  Children will be grouped into appropriate classes prior to or at the first meeting. Our club is organized by a volunteer coordinator and volunteer coaches.

 Registration:

 Please register online at mysl.org

  • Registration online November 10, 2009 – December 13….$25 per skier

  • Registration online December 14 – December 21, 2009…. $30 per skier

  • December 21th 2009 registration deadline. You will need permission from the club leader (me) to register for the club after this date.  I am asking for this deadline to allow for time to find the number of coaches our club will need, thus it is important for me to know the number of skiers joining. You need to contact me at the phone number or email provided below.

  • NEW 2009 We are adding the ability to pay ($20 for season) for rental equipment as part of registration (and collect size info). If equipment runs out, it is very easy for us to refund  skiers via online payment.

Cancellation Policy:

If the temperatures/windchill are dangerous we will cancel our session.  If driving conditions are poor, then please use your best judgement as to whether or not you will attend that day.  As a group, we will cancel when the air temp drops below -10˚ F, and/or the wind chill drops below -15˚ F.  If we need to cancel, then I will e-mail a cancellation notice to each household by noon (12:00).   I will also post an announcement on this web page. You can call me Sunday morning at (651-674-6096) or (651-785-6549).

Equipment and Clothing:

Buying your own:  Think about buying your own equipment from a retailer or a ski swap.  The MYSL has a ski swap each November. See the link on the side of this page for details.  One advantage about buying from a ski swap or retailer, is that you can use it throughout the season, and then sell your equipment back at a ski swap the following year or when it no longer fits.

Renting: Club equipment rental fee per skier for the season is $20. This equipment can be taken home. $ from club rental fees will be used to purchase more club skis for future seasons. Limited supply.

State park equipment rental $5 per session ($7 adults). This equipment must remain at the park. Almost endless supply.

Purchasing your own skis: Waxable skis are easier to learn good technique with and ultimately more fun because of better glide. For the youngest skiers, waxless skis are more convenient and enjoyable. If you are considering new skis for an advanced skier, we recommend classic skis for both striding and skating because of their range of use and flexibility. Combination skis and skating skis are very rigid for young, light skiers, and perform poorly in soft to medium packed snow.

Clothing: Dress your child appropriately for the day's weather. Start with good ski socks. Younger children should wear snow suits. Older children should wear layers: polypropylene underwear, insulating fleece layer, and a non-absorbent outer layer to cut the wind and keep out the snow. Warm hats and mittens are mandatory. The attachment entitled "New Skier Orientation" has more clothing suggestions.

Volunteering and Parent Involvement:

We need volunteers to run our Club. The MYSL is a volunteer organization. Your Club Leader already has a lot to do and welcomes your help with snacks, drinks, assisting group coaches, and even being a group coach! Group coaches need to make a commitment to 8 afternoons, understand the fundamentals of skiing, and have fun (Moms and Dads are great at this!). You do not need to be an expert, just willing to help. Some ways to help are:

  • Coach

  • Assistant coach

  • Snack

  • Bibs

  • Trail Center attendant (keep the fire going)

  • Potluck

  • Prairieloppet volunteer

Parents: If you are the parent of a 4 or 5-year old or have a skier in First Steppers, we ask you to accompany your skier on snow at all times, either on or off skis. We encourage all parents to bring their skis along and join the fun, either with their child's group or skiing around the park

After ski snack:  After skiing for an hour and a half, skiers will come into the trail center and have a snack and warm drink before departing. Parents will be asked to host an after ski snack for the youth. Each week we will have a different host. The host will be reponsible for clean up of the trail center also. There will be a sign up sheet at early registration and our first skiing date.

Parking and other costs:

State Park Vehicle Permit (Day permit $5) or (Annual $25) is required for all vehicles entering a state park. This can be purchased and used at any state park.

Minnesota Ski Pass (Day permit $5) or (Annual $15) or (Three Season $40) is required for all skiers 16 and older. Purchase on line at: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/licenses/skipass/index.html or at state park office.

Trollhollow youth skier fee ($5 per day).  Coaches ski for free
